Tarangire National Park

Overview

Tarangire National Park ranks 6th largest national park in Tanzania, which covers an area of 2600 sq.km. it is the most popular for its large elephant herds and small wildlife migration. That takes place during dry season, whereby about 250,000 animals enter the park and can be seen during mid-day when they drink water at Tarangire river.

The park lies between meadows of maasai steppe to south-east and lakes of great rift valley to the north and west. North part lies the life line of park (Tarangire river) particularly in dry season, it flows northward until exit park north-west corner to pour into Lake Burungi. South has lots of swamps that dry into green plains during dry season in the south.

The park is drier than Serengeti, however its vegetation is much greener especially with most elephant grass. Vast grass with mixed acacia woodland, let’s not forget giant baobab trees that can live up to 600years and can store up to 300-900ltrs of water.

Tarangire migration, every year during dry season that is June to November the park hosts less dramatic migration not like Serengeti. During such time most region gets dry except Tarangire river, which remains only source of water that attracts plenty of wild-animals like wildebeests, zebras, gazelle, elephant and cape buffaloes. The prey goes to the river to quench their thirst which in return it attracts predators like lion, cheetah and leopards.
